AJ Lee has “retired” from WWE, the company announced late on Friday.

Lee, real name April Mendez, had recently returned from injury and teamed with Paige to defeat Nikki and Brie Bella at WrestleMania 31 last weekend.

She had been in a tough situation ever since her husband, CM Punk, left WWE last year, walking out of the company and eventually signing up with the UFC.

Punk, real name Phil Brooks, had last year revealed that WWE fired him on his and Mendez’s wedding day and also claimed on a podcast that WWE ringside doctor Chris Amann had misdiagnosed an staph infection for months and also over-medicated him.

Those claims in turn led to Amann taking legal action against Punk for defamation.

WWE posted the following on their Twitter account to announce AJ’s decision:BREAKING: AJ Lee (April Mendez) has decided to retire from in-ring competition with WWE. We wish AJ the very best.

A short statement on their official website said: “AJ Lee (April Mendez) has decided to retire from in-ring competition with WWE. We wish AJ the very best.”
