Carl Froch has ruled out an Amir Khan victory if the British welterweight is finally granted his wish to fight Floyd Mayweather this September.
Mayweather is currently assessing his options for what is scheduled to be the final fight of his career and Khan is said to be one of the front runners for the bout. Khan has long since campaigned for a shot at the pound-for-pound king, but Froch has written off the chances of the Bolton man were he ever to step into the ring with the unbeaten American.
''I don't think he's good enough'' said Froch to the Daily Mirror.
I don't think there's anybody out there who is. That's no disrespect to Amir Khan; but when he steps up he gets beaten. People think I'm having a go at him, but I'm not.''
''You can't put somebody like Khan, who's been beat by three/four people, up against Mayweather. He got knocked out by Prescott and Garcia, and Peterson had him down.''
''If you're losing to that level [of fighter], you can't put him up against Floyd Mayweather and expect him to win.''
''But a fight is a fight. It's interesting, but I don't think he will stand a chance.''
Froch and Khan have often engaged in verbal sparring through the media over the years, but it would be difficult to disagree with Froch's comments on this occasion. Although, Mayweather doesn't have too many alternate options right now, either, having dismantled what was said to be his biggest challenge in Manny Pacquiao last month.
Another British welterweight, Kell Brook, currently holds the IBF belt in the division and has also been mentioned as a potential opponent, as has American Keith Thurman. It is Khan, though, who has the biggest name and star power from the current available options and remains the favourite to win the Mayweather sweepstakes.
Khan has won his last three bouts since moving up to the 147lbs division, including impressive performances against Luis Collazo and Devon Alexander. A sub-par performance in his last contest against Chris Algieri did take some of the shine off of those performances, however.'
