When is Floyd Mayweather v Conor McGregor?

Leigh Copson in Boxing 24 Jul 2017

Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor will collide in what is being billed as the biggest fight in the history of combat sports on Saturday, August 26.

Mayweather was the undisputed king of the boxing world as he won world titles in five different weight classes en route to a perfect 49-0 professional record before he hung up his gloves in September 2015, but at the age of 40 ‘Money’ has been tempted out of retirement to face the biggest start in mixed martial arts, ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor.

McGregor’s rise up the MMA ranks has been nothing short of spectacular, with the 29-year-old going from the minor leagues of the sport – and a life on benefits – to the very top of the UFC in only a handful of fights.

Having exploded onto the UFC scene with a first-round stoppage of Marcus Brimage in 2013, ‘The Notorious’ has compiled a 9-1 record inside the Octagon while becoming the first man in history to hold two UFC titles in two different weight classes at the same time, having dethroned Jose Aldo in 13 seconds to win the featherweight title before stopping Eddie Alvarez in the second round to become the lightweight champion.

McGregor has made a habit of silencing his doubters – with ‘Mystic Mac’ delivering on pre-fight predictions on several occasions – but this is undoubtedly the toughest test he has fought in career. Can the Irishman really do what the likes of Oscar De La Hoya, Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto, Ricky Hatton and Shane Mosley could not do by beating Mayweather? He says yes!

“He is f****d”, McGregor said during the Los Angeles press conference. “I'm going to knock him out inside four rounds, mark my words. He will be unconscious in four rounds. He's never experienced someone like me. I don't fear him. This is a limited set of rules that makes this half a fight, a quarter of a fight. If this was a true fight, it wouldn't even take one round.”

But of course, ‘Money’ is more than confident that he will record win number 50 and back into retirement with his in-ring legacy intact?

“You cannot defeat me,” Mayweather told McGregor in New York. “You can call me every name in the book, you can come at me in different ways, [but] when a guy is across from me all he’s going to say to himself is ‘Damn, I’m fighting Floyd Mayweather.’”

So who will win this fight for the ages? That question will be answered on the night of Saturday, August 26 (the early hours of Sunday morning if you are based in Europe) with the new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada the stage for this gigantic fight.
