Let’s analyze Race 9 at Mountaineer on Tuesday night.
Mountaineer’s featured race on Tuesday night is a rare stakes race. For BetUS online racebook fans, Mountaineer is always a tough place to find winners.
But I believe I’ve found one in this stakes race, the Ohio Valley Handicap, on Tuesday night. It’s important to realize that stakes races at Mountaineer aren’t on the same level as stakes races at other race tracks. Therefore, overlays that are overlays because of the perceived class hike, might be ready to win. Such is the case with Tuesday’s pick of the day.
Mountaineer – Race 9
Ohio Valley Handicap
For Fillies and Mares Three Years Old and Upward
6 furlongs on dirt
A Little Wild - - +800 morning line
This daughter of Wild Wonder is coming over from a fantastic race at Presque Isle Downs where she garnered a terrific speed rating and then lost by only a length. That race was for $40,000 optional claiming. Even though she’s jumping up in class, the class jump isn’t nearly what one might expect. A Little Wild can definitely do some good things in this race by simply staying behind an expected fast pace and then making a move in the stretch. If she improves off of that race at Presque Isle Downs, then she should be ready to win.
Hadavision - - +400 morning line
This four year old filly goes second time for trainer Daniel Smithwick. She’s going to be farther off the pace than A Little Wild and because of that she could find herself having too much to do. But, if she gets an opening, and the pace if fast enough, she too could win this. She gets an extra furlong to work with in this after finishing second at 5 furlongs on this track in her last race.
Pay The Man - - +250 morning line
She’s just as fast as the morning line chalk, Southern Yankee, and breaks from the outside of that one. Pay the Man is actually the key in this race. If she puts pressure on the chalk, then she sets it up for A Little Wild and Hadavision. If she doesn’t, then the chalk probably wins this. I’m thinking she pressures the chalk because that’s the only way she can run and picking up a second or third as opposed to simply running out is better than nothing at all.
I love A Little Wild at those odds and will bet her to win and place. I will bet an exacta box with A Little Wild, Pay the Man and Hadavision. I will key A Little Wild in all three slots in the trifecta with Pay The Man, Hadavision and the chalk, Southern Yankee.
