NFL Week 1 picks: Sunday predictions for Ravens at Bengals, Eagles at Redskins, Seahawks at Packers and Giants at Cowboys

Leigh Copson in NFL 9 Sep 2017

Week One of the 2017 NFL season continues with a busy Sunday schedule that includes Philadelphia at Washington, NY Giants at Dallas and Seattle at Green Bay. Read on for all of our predictions and picks...

Atlanta Falcons at Chicago Bears (18:00 BST)

Could this be the latest case of a Super Bowl loser suffering a serious hangover the following season? After all, no team has collapsed in the biggest game of all like the Falcons did in February. First up for them is a trip to face a Chicago team that are still in the rebuilding phase, and that is probably good timing for Atlanta. The Falcons still have some issues to work out on both sides of the ball after an underwhelming showing pre-season, but this is a team that will be heading back to the post-season next January and they should start that run with a win here. The Bears can keep it close though, with the aid of a talented front seven on defense ensuring Matt Ryan & Co. do not run riot.

Prediction: Falcons to win

Baltimore Ravens at Cincinnati Bengals (18:00 BST)

The Cincinnati Bengals have had Baltimore’s number in recent years, winning five of the last six meetings, but the tide could turn on the opening Sunday of the 2017 season. Quarterback Joe Flacco may have sat out the entire pre-season, but he is coming up against a Bengals defense that is depleted by injuries and suspension and that should allow him to work out the rust. And of course, Flacco will get a large amount of help from a Baltimore defense that could be the best the franchise have had in a few years. The Ravens will keep this one close and grind out the win.

Prediction: Ravens to win

Philadelphia Eagles at Washington Redskins (18:00 BST)

Philadelphia lost both of their games against Washington last season and they will be desperate to ensure that does not happen again in 2017. They have the perfect opportunity when these two NFC East rivals go head-to-head on Sunday – Redskins head coach Jay Gruden has taken over play-calling this season and it appears as though him and quarterback Kirk Cousins are still trying to get in sync. That should help out a questionable Eagles secondary, but while there are concerns about that group there can be no doubts about how good Philly’s offensive and defensive lines are, while QB Carson Wentz has some shiny new weapons at his disposal. Philly can record a big road win here.

Prediction: Eagles to win

Pittsburgh Steelers at Cleveland Browns (18:00 BST)

Could the Cleveland Browns actually be on the up this season? The Browns front office have done a good job of improving the playing squad in the off-season, but the simple fact is they are a long way from being in Pittsburgh’s lead. If anyone in the AFC is going to deny New England a return to the Super Bowl it is Ben Roethlisberger & Co. The Steelers should make a strong start to the season by beating Cleveland in comprehensive fashion.

Prediction: Steelers to win

Seattle Seahawks at Green Bay Packers (21:35 BST)

Could this be a dress rehearsal for this season’s NFC Championship Game? Once again these two teams are front-runners with the bookies when it comes to winning the conference, and both will be looking to lay down a marker in this season-opener. So who takes the ‘W’? I am going with the Green Bay Packers. Seattle should be in for another good season, but on the road the Seahawks are a shadow of the team they are when they step out at CenturyLink Field, and their record at Lambeau Field does not make for pretty reading – they have lost on each of their last seven visits and have not won in ‘Titletown’ since November 1999. Aaron Rodgers will lead his team to victory in what could be one of the most entertaining games we see this weekend.

Prediction: Packers to win

New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys (01:30 BST Monday)

The Dallas Cowboys ran away with the NFC East title last season, finishing with a 13-3 record, but if there was one team that had their number it was these New York Giants. Head coach Ben McAdoo and his coaches led the Giants to a season sweep over the Cowboys last season, which included a 20-19 victory at AT&T Stadium, and they could leave Arlington with a win once again on Sunday night. New York’s defensive line are capable of dealing with this highly-rated Dallas offensive line and on the opposite side of the football Eli Manning and his receivers should have plenty of success against this poor Cowboys secondary, even if Odell Beckham Jr is absent. The Giants really do match up well against ‘America’s Team’ and that can result in an opening-weekend win for the team from the ‘Big Apple’.

Prediction: Giants to win
