Speaking ahead of the game, Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has said he is determined to help the club challenge for the Premier League title this season.

Van Gaal has come in for criticism following the Red Devils’ exit from the Champions League in midweek, but the Dutchman remains confident that his methods will see United challenging for honours in the near future.
And, with his side just three points off the summit of the Premier League ahead of a trip to Bournemouth, he told reporters: “I have a task. I came to improve and win the title, when it is possible.

“We are in that process, but when I say that, I shall have the criticism that football is not a process and things like that.

“We have a lot to fight for, I think. We are very close in the Premier League to the top. We can fight for the FA Cup and fight also for the Europa League, so I think we have enough to fight for.

“The problem is that we have to meet the expectations and the expectations at a club like United are very high.”

Van Gaal confirmed at his pre-match press conference that defenders Chris Smalling and Matteo Darmian will miss the trip to the south coast due to injury, with Wayne Rooney, Ander Herrera, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia also ruled out.

Midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin has overcome a hip problem and should feature, with the Frenchman set to step in for the suspended Bastian Schweinsteiger.
