Atleti Madrid put one foot in the semi-finals with a convincing first leg win at the Estadio Vicente Calderon. Antoine Griezmann, Angel Correa and Kevin Gameiro all found the back of the net in a 3-0 victor for Diego Simeone’s side and that means it would be a massive upset if they do not book their place in the final four tonight.
Atletico have lost just one of their last nine competitive games while Eibar have won only one of their last five and go into this match on the back of a couple of convincing defeats to the big guns. That 3-0 loss at Atletico in the first leg of this tie was followed by a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Barcelona at the weekend, and although Simeone is likely to rest some of his key players for this one you have to like Atletico’s chances of winning the second leg.
The bookmakers certainly do, having made the visitors the odds-on favourites, but they have taken a risk by not going too short with the odds and you can get a backable price on Madrid taking this second leg. And why shouldn’t they? Eibar have not beaten them since April 2001 and Atletico have won each of the last eight competitive meetings between these two clubs.
Atletico have kept clean sheets in five of those successes but it would not surprise me to see Eibar at least get on the scoresheet here. Simeone may weaken his defence with a spot of tinkering and the home side simply have to go for it because they have just 90 minutes to turn around a three-goal deficit. They will have to pour forward and while that could well result in a goal for them, it is likely to gift Madrid openings at the other end – openings that they can take to win the game and march on.
