International Soccer - Iraq vs. New Zealand

At 2:30pm ET Iraq and New Zealand will be squaring off at the Confederation Cup.

Iraq, coming off a narrow loss to Spain, are still in contention for a spot in the semis. In order to seize a berth in the final four they will have to beat New Zealand, which according to the soccer betting line would not appear to be a difficult task. New Zealand has proven to be the weakest side of the FIFA Confederations Cup and the consensus in the outright soccer betting market is that Iraq should be able to dispose of New Zealand easily.

Soccer Betting Line, all odds BetUS:

Iraq -1 -155 -225 2½ O -110 U -120 Draw +285

New Zealand +1 +125 +550 2½ O -110 U -120 Draw +285

Match Time: 2:30 P.M. Eastern Time Saturday June 20, 2009

Iraq have semi-final ambitions.

Iraq arrived in South Africa as huge underdogs and most soccer pundits did not expect them to do well. However, undeterred by how the market had cast them, Iraq arrived full of optimism. Having announced their semi-final intentions right from the start they backed it up by holding host nation South Africa to a goalless draw in their first match. Against Spain, they put forward a spirited performance that saw them only narrowly lose to the European Champions. Both performances were encouraging as to have led the market to revise its position on Iraq. They are still searching for their first win of the competition.

New Zealand blanked in their first two fixtures.

New Zealand is pointless in this competition and they are still searching for that elusive point. They have proven to be the weakest side at this year’s FIFA Confederations Cup and they are dangerously close to ending the competition without having gained a point. This match for New Zealand will be about pride and salvaging what is left of their disappointing campaign. Defensively, New Zealand have been the most porous side. Their spirits and confidence is low.

Soccer Betting Verdict: Given how porous New Zealand have been during group action, no respectable side should fail to score. Iraq has the skills and the calibre to befuddle New Zealand’s backline and find the net. At the same time, New Zealand will probably try to find the net as well but that could be even more to their detriment as that will expose them to the counterattack and reveal the vulnerability of their defensive line even more. Therefore, the over 2.5 goals is deemed a good play (listed at -120 at BetUS). More importantly, Iraq at -225 for the win is also a good bet.
