Robin van Persie deserves credit for leaving Arsenal last year and signing for Manchester United, according to former Gunners star Marc Overmars.

Van Persie left Arsenal in summer 2012, joining United in a £24million deal.

In his first season at Old Trafford, the Netherlands international won his first Premier League title, and Overmars believes "everybody should be happy" with the forward's big-money move.

"The boss, [Arsene] Wenger, was very good.  At the time he bought excellent young players, and got Van Persie for £1.5m," he told Absolute Radio.

"When he came to Arsenal and got the chance to learn from Bergkamp, it was a great move for him.

"The transfer to Man United was not a big deal either. You have to give him credit.

"He played for Arsenal for six years.  He performed and delivered and they got a great transfer, so everybody should be happy."

United return to action on Saturday when they host play host to Southampton at Old Trafford.
