Manchester United are reportedly ready to axe Patrice Evra and replace him with Alexander Buttner for this weekend's clash with Wigan.

According to the Daily Mirror, Evra's place in United's starting line-up is in doubt and new signing Buttner could be handed a start in Sir Alex Ferguson's side.

Ferguson could also recall David De Gea in goal after Anders Lindegaard looked nervous at times during the recent 3-2 win against Southampton.

United signed Buttner from Vitesse last month in a £4million deal, but one of the club's own scouts revealed that the 23-year-old wasn't anywhere near the top of his recommendations.

According to United scout Ed van Stijn, the Dutchman was only the third or fourth best player in his position in the Eredivisie last season.

Speaking to Algemeen Dagblad recently, United's head scout in Netherlands revealed: "Every season [United] ask all their European scouts for a list of players.

"They ask you for a top five of the best players from the Eredivisie in any position."

And Van Stijn added: "On the list, at the end of last season, I had Buttner at number three or four.

"I would place him behind Jetro Willems."
