Roma have admitted they are hopeful that Daniele De Rossi will sign a new contract at the club rather than moving to the Premier League.
Both Manchester City and rivals Manchester United are keen on signing the 28-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of the season.
City boss Roberto Mancini recently said he believes the Italy international would be "absolutely perfect" in his midfield and was thought to be considering making a move to sign him in January.
Mancini's hopes of signing De Rossi had been boosted by reports in Italy earlier this month which suggested the midfielder was looking for a bumper pay rise before agreeing to stay at the Stadio Olimpico.
But City appear to have lost out on their man, with reports in Italy suggesting Roma will offer De Rossi around €5million a year to stay with the Serie A side.
Roma CEO Claudio Fenucci earlier this month had said he was confident of agreeing a new deal with the player.
