Manchester City sign Benjamin Mendy for world record transfer fee

Neil Roarty in Soccer 24 Jul 2017

Manchester City have broken the world transfer record for a defender with their £52 million signing of Benjamin Mendy from AS Monaco

Manchester City have signed AS Monaco defender Benjamin Mendy for a fee of £52 million, making the 23-year-old Frenchman the world's most expensive defender.

City paid an initial £45 million for right-back Kyle Walker earlier in the summer transfer window and have continued to strengthen their defence with the signing of left-back Mendy, who joins on a five year deal.

The France international moved to Monaco for £11 million last summer and played 37 games for the side from the principality, helping them to win France's Ligue 1 title and reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League. He was City's number one defensive target this summer and they were willing to pay a record breaking fee for his services.

"He is undoubtedly one of the world's best full-backs, our number one target in this position," said director of football Txiki Begiristain.

Mendy's signing means that City have now spent more than £200 million on new players this summer with Walker, Ederson Moraes, Bernardo Silva and Danilo all joining Pep Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium.
