Manchester United are once again being linked with a move for Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell.
Rodwell has been linked with a move to Old Trafford throughout the year and reports towards the end of last season had suggested that Everton manager David Moyes was ready to quit the club if the England international had been sold.
Despite Moyes' reported threats, the 20-year-old was widely expected to be sold by the Toffees during the summer in a bid to ease their financial problems, and in September, one report suggested United rejected the chance to sign the player when he was offered to them by the Merseysiders for £15million.
But United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is widely expected to sign a midfielder in January following the loss of Darren Fletcher earlier this week, with the Scotland international joining the likes of Anderson and Tom Cleverley on the sidelines.
And according to the Daily Telegraph, Rodwell is once again a potential target for Ferguson ahead of the transfer window reopening in just a few weeks time.
Ferguson, who has in recent seasons preferred to make big money signings during the summer, still has Michael Carrick, Ji-sung Park and Darron Gibson available, but the loss of Fletcher is a huge one for the Scot, who is yet to replace Paul Scholes following his retirement last summer.
It is thought that Everton could be tempted to sell Rodwell in the New Year for around £20m, which may make a deal more appealing to the Red Devils given valuations of alternative targets. United have also been linked with Inter Milan playmaker Wesley Sneijder, Tottenham's Croatian star Luka Modric and Newcastle midfielder Cheick Tiote.
Spurs continue to insist that Modric is not for sale, while injury and a loss of form may well have ended Ferguson's interest in Sneijder.
Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi is also believed to be a target for the reigning Premier League champions.
