Virgil Van Dijk left out of Southampton pre-season squad amid fresh Liverpool transfer claims

Neil Roarty in Soccer 24 Jul 2017

Southampton captain Virgil van Dijk could well be heading for the exit door after been left out of the Saints’ squad for their pre-season tour of France this week.

The Dutch centre-half has been strongly linked with a move to Liverpool during the transfer window, and it appears that his future lies away from St. Mary’s.

Southampton have expressed their desire to keep Van Dijk at the club, while Liverpool said they had ended their interest in signing him last month.

However, having trained alone last week with new Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino revealing that he was “not 100%” mentally, this could be the biggest hint yet regarding speculation surrounding the 26-year-old’s future.

Should he leave, Van Dijk, who joined the club from Celtic in 2015, would be the second big name to exit St. Mary’s during this transfer window, following the sale of striker Jay Rodriguez to West Bromwich Albion for £15 million earlier this month.

A move to Liverpool would see him face competition from the likes of Dejan Lovren, Ragnar Klavan and Joel Matip in the centre of the Reds' defence.
