Stanislas Wawrinka takes on Santiago Giraldo this evening in the second round of the 2013 Mutua Madrid Open (17:30 BST start).
Wawrinka was superb in Monte-Carlo last month, blasting past Andy Murray 6-1 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals. And just last week at the Portugal Open, he recorded up his second win over a top five player in a month, seeing off top seed David Ferrer to win his fourth ATP title.
Wawrinka has definitely gone up a level in 2013. At January's Australian Open, he pushed eventual champion Novak Djokovic closer than anyone in a fourth round thriller. He has always been a sublime shotmaker, but now he's doing it consistently throughout matches and has improved the defensive side of his game.
Wawrinka had no problem overcoming wildcard Marius Copil 6-4 6-4 in the opening round on Tuesday, taking control of the match early on. However, he never really needed to get out of second gear and that's another skill Wawrinka has learnt over the past year which has enabled him to conserve energy for the latter stages.
Giraldo did well to come through two rounds of qualifying at the weekend, defeating the experienced Sergiy Stakhovsky in the final round. He then made the most of his opportunity, stunning Martin Klizan 6-2 6-4 in the first round, but it's hard to see him troubling Wawrinka in his current form.
Prediction: Wawrinka in two.
