Li edged Sara Errani in her opening round robin match and now meets Jankovic, who seems to be rolling back the years.
Li might have beaten Errani in her opener but there was a thought that perhaps she believed she was going to face first alternate Caroline Wozniacki instead, after the Italian had injured her calf in the first match.
Errani was able to make their second set much more competitive, pushing Li to a tie-break, but the straight sets win went to Li, who sets up a match with Jankovic.
Former doubles partners, they have had some close matches in the past and heading to the US Open, were tied at four matches a-piece, but their fourth-round encounter saw Jankovic abandon her focus entirely to lose in straight sets with a bagel in the second set.
Fast forward to the WTA Championships and Jankovic is a much more confident soul – happy to be back at the top flight and enjoying playing for the first time in a couple of years. She has tried to put in a few new aspects to her game – more pop on a previously ineffective serve, and a lot more ready to play at the net.
But there have been some changes in Li’s coaching make up now. Under the watchful eye of Justine Henin’s former coach Carlos Rodriguez, Li seems to have got a handle on her on-court nerves and anxieties when things are not quite going right, and it seems to be working for her.
This should have the makings of being an entertaining match if both are on song and playing to their full ability, especially given Jankovic’s form after beating Victoria Azarenka in her first round robin match.
