Maria Sharapova takes on Lucie Safarova later today for a place in the quarter-finals of the Mutua Madrid Open (10:00 BST start).
Sharapova has made a solid start to the 2012 Mutua Madrid Open, booking her place in the third round by recording a 6-4 6-3 win over Klara Zakopalova on Tuesday.
The Czech was able to break Sharapova’s serve twice, but the world No. 2 responded with five breaks, and never seemed to be at risk of losing.
"The good thing about indoors is you pretty much know what you're going to get in terms of the conditions," said Sharapova afterwards.
"You don't have to worry about the wind or anything, so it's a plus that with this ever-changing weather we could have the roof. We actually didn't know until the last minute if it was going to be open or closed - but you just try to focus on what's ahead."
Sharapova now takes on another Czech in Lucie Safarova, who also made steady progress on Tuesday, working her way past wildcard entrant Carla Suarez Navarro in straight sets, 6-3 6-4.
Safarova defeated Sharapova in the first round of this event two years ago. The Russian should be eager to avenge this loss, and we can expect her to make amends later today.
Prediction: Sharapova in two.
