Marion Bartoli takes on Lucie Safarova this afternoon in the quarter-finals of the WTA Doha Open.
Bartoli managed to put a stop to Tsvetana Pironkova’s unexpected run in Doha on Thursday, beating the Bulgarian 6-3 6-3.
Bartoli has been playing with great consistency in recent weeks, and there’s a good chance that she willl challenge for the title over the weekend.
Still, she faces a very tricky quarter-final showdown with Lucie Safarova later today.
Safarova’s threat should not be overlooked here. The Czech has been playing immensely well in Doha, racking up wins against Urszula Radwanska, second seed Caroline Wozniacki, and two-time slam winner Svetlana Kuznetsova. With results like this, Safarova is playing well enough to test anybody in the WTA.
Past form is on Bartoli’s side heading into this matchup. She holds a 4-1 head-to-head lead against the 25-year-old, though this advantage is cut to 2-1 when only hard court meeting are taken into account.
The world No. 7 is the likely winner here, but she can take nothing for granted against Safarova.
Prediction: Bartoli in three.
