Maria Sharapova takes on Eugenie Bouchard this afternoon in the second round of the 2013 Sony Open in Miami (21:00 GMT start).
Sharapova enters the 2013 Miami Masters on a high having won the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells last week. With her success, the Russian reclaimed the No. 2 spot in the rankings and added another twist in the race for the year-end No. 1 battle.
Some are tipping Masha to record back-to-back titles, but with Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka in the draw it will take nothing short of a huge effort. Still, Maria seems confident.
"I feel on good form. With the two events so close together [Indian Wells and Miami] there is always an adjustment from the desert to the humidity here… But it’s something we’re used to," she told reporters earlier this week.
Sharapova’s first opponent will be junior Wimbledon champion Bouchard. The young Canadian has a bright future ahead of her and she’ll surely be eager to cause a huge upset here. She got through the first round with a 4-6 6-1 6-4 win over Israel’s Shahar Peer.
Sharapova is without a doubt the favourite here, though her 19-year-old opponent is one of the hottest young talents in the WTA. This could be an intriguing test for the Russian.
Prediction: Sharapova in two.
