Novak Djokovic takes on Grigor Dimitrov this afternoon in the third round of the 2013 French Open at Roland Garros (15:00 BST start).
From the moment the French Open draw was released, there was one third round match-up that grabbed the imagination of all who were watching. The draw has panned out as expected, so we can now look forward to the mouthwatering prospect of a Djokovic vs. Dimitrov showdown.
This year's meeting between the two players in Madrid provides the background story for this match. The 'big four' still have a stranglehold on the slam titles and their position at the top of the game looks fairly unthreatened. However, several younger players have started to make a statement, and Dimitrov made arguably the biggest statement of all by overcoming the Djoker in three sets at the Magic Box.
Some will say that Novak wasn't at his best and perhaps with good reason. Even so, Dimitrov was fearless and his potential is there for all to see. Is there any chance that the win marks the start of a changing of the guard? We'll probably find out later today.
The reason to be on upset alert is obvious here, though Nole's status as the favourite is impossible to ignore. He's deservedly built a huge lead for himself at the top of the world rankings, and his Monte Carlo performances proved that the Career Grand Slam is possible.
Over five sets Dimitrov isn't going to get away with being anything shy of exceptional. He took down the Serb in a three-setter but a slam match is in many ways a very different prospect. Seeking the one slam that has eluded him, Novak will undoubtedly be ready to throw everything he has at the young Bulgarian and Grigor won't be lacking motivation either.
