Nadal will be aiming to make history this week in Paris, but how will he fare in his tournament opener against Granollers?

Nadal has never previously won the Paris Masters, yet for very good reason he's arguably the title favourite this week. The Spaniard has been the ATP's standout player on hardcourts this season, and despite having lost a handful of matches towards the end of the year remains the man to beat.

If anyone thinks that Nadal will have one eye on the upcoming ATP World Tour Finals, bear in mind that Rafa has plenty to play for this week, including the chance to make history. Should he win this week's title he'll  become the first player to win six Masters 1000 titles in one season. His best performance here to date came in 2007 when he was beaten by David Nalbandian in the final.

Nadal will begin his 2013 Paris Masters title charge with a second round clash against Granollers. The World No. 39 produced a solid performance in the first round to eliminate an in-form Dmitry Tursunov 6-4 6-4.

Granollers was particularly impressive on serve, saving all four of the break points that Tursunov was able to carve out.

Although Granollers started brightly here in Paris there are no doubts regarding who the favourite is for this contest. Granollers was beaten convincingly by Nadal on both of the occasions that they met last season, and if anything, Nadal is an even more formidable opponent now.

It would be a surprise to see anything other than a comfortable straight sets win for the top seed later today.
