Federer can secure qualification for the ATP World Tour Finals later today, but will Anderson be able to put his bid in jeopardy?
Federer finished as the runner-up at last week's Swiss Indoors in Basel and is now just one win away from securing his place at the World Tour Finals in London. The Swiss ace has been through his least successful season in over a decade, but has still performed well enough to be in contention for the year-ending event.
As the fifth seed, Federer was handed a bye for the first round of this week's ATP Paris Masters. Given the current points situation, this means that he'll be competing in London if he can get through his tournament opener tonight.
The draw has pitted Federer against South Africa's Anderson, who has been enjoying the best season of his career in 2013.
Anderson didn't receive a particularly kind draw, and had to take on Valencia Open 500 champion Mikhail Youzhny in round one. However, Youzhny's Valencia exploits appeared to catch up with him on court and he was forced to retire early on in the third set. Anderson was leading 4-6 7-6 2-1 when the match came to an early end.
Today's meeting will be the first contest to take place between Federer and Anderson. Federer seemed to rediscover some of his confidence last week and he should be able to pull through this clash. That said, he'll need to work hard to deal with Anderson's serve.
The 6'8" World No. 21 can cause his opponents all sorts of problems when he's firing on all cylinders.
