Preview:

The WTA Championships get underway today in Istanbul, and Serena will be aiming to meet expectations as the top seed in the tournament. She's the star player in the Red Group and will start the round robin phase of the competition with a match against Kerber. Right now it seems unlikely that the American will slip up.

After a tremendous 2012 season, Williams showed no signs of slowing down. Entering the final tournament of the year she's compiled a staggering 73-4 match record and has already won 10 titles. Following triumphs at the French Open and US Open, the World No. 1 is very much the player to beat in 2013. She's on a bit of a winning streak right now, having backed up her Flushing Meadows success by winning the China Open.

Kerber has also been in good form lately though her stats don't stack up too well next to Serena's. The German reached the draw here as the final qualifier after finishing ninth in the WTA race to Istanbul. Had it not been for the withdrawal of Maria Sharapova she wouldn't be competing here.

That said, Kerber has put together a great season and was able to win her first title of the year earlier this month by winning the Generali Ladies Linz.

Kerber is evidently the underdog here, but she's one of the few players to have beaten Williams in the past. The 32-year-old currently has the edge in the head to head though, having won two of her three meetings with Kerber. The two players last met competitively at last year's edition of the WTA Championships, where Serena claimed a 6-4 6-1 victory.
