Jankovic was first into the today's final with a three-set battle over Tokyo champion Petra Kvitova on Saturday. After losing a tightly contested first set tie-break, Jankovic had to get through the hard way again, and controlled the second and third sets as Kvitova faded towards the end of the match.
Beijing has a lot of memories for the eighth seed as she prepares to face Williams. She reached the World No. 1 spot herself for the first time in 2008 with her quarter-final appearance in the Beijing Olympics, before relinquishing the spot despite making the US Open final (losing to Williams).
Williams managed to overwhelm Agnieszka Radwanska despite tweaking her back and requiring a medical time-out.
The head to head between Williams and Jankovic has a history of being fairly even sided, but Williams has won the last two meetings, including a three-setter at Charleston this year in the final.
Jankovic has been playing with a lot more aggression lately, as well as playing a lot more doubles to improve her net play, and the results have been evident as she has clawed herself back up the rankings since dropping out of the Top 20 for the first time since 2005.
Serena is far and away the best player in the world right now, but she has had just a couple of moments of vulnerability (Australian Open and Wimbledon) and she has reached 11 finals this year.
Williams’ serving and returning has been as imperious as always, but Jankovic has solid defence skills and an ability to get balls back that would be winners for anyone else. What the Serb still lacks though is the ability to gain free points on her serve consistently.
