Marin Cilic takes on Australia’s Marinko Matosevic this evening in the first round of the 2012 US Open (21:00 BST start).
World No. 13 Cilic enters this year’s US Open with high hopes. He’s been in good form of late and will be doing his utmost over the next few months to clinch an unexpected place in the ATP World Tour Finals.
He might not be biting away at the heels of the top eight just yet, but with so much hard court tennis to be played, the Croat should not be dismissed.
Cilic gets his 2012 US Open charge underway on Monday with a first round match against Matosevi, who has had a good season by his standards and currently sits just outside of the top fifty. Whether or not he’ll be able to test Cilic, however, remains to be seen.
Prior to this match it doesn’t seem like Matosevic stands much of a chance. Cilic is a former quarter-finalist at Flushing Meadows and one of the ATP’s best on this kind of surface. He’s got bags of experience at this level and is unlikely to falter at this stage of the competition.
Prediction: Cilic in three.
