Sabine Lisicki takes on Serena Williams this afternoon in the quarter-finals of the Family Circle Cup (18:00 BST start).
Lisicki twice had to battle back from a break down on Thursday, but was still able to get past Kazakh qualifier Yaroslava Shvedova in straight sets.
Williams has had a comfortable path to the last eight this week in Charleston, and she recorded a straightforward 6-2 6-2 win over Marina Erakovic.
The American proved to be too powerful for Erakovic, and she racked up the winners with ease as the contest continued.
Lisicki was beaten soundly in her only previous matchup against Serena, losing 6-1 6-2 at Stanford last year.
"It can only get better," said Lisicki on Thursday, reflecting on the loss.
"I was very nervous there in the beginning. I made some terrible mistakes and overhit way too many balls. In the second set I actually had chances - the games were close, and it was a good match from mid-second set on. So I hope I can start like that tomorrow."
Prediction: Williams in three.
