Serena Williams takes on Mallory Burdette this afternoon in the third round of the 2013 Family Circle Cup (18:00 BST start).
Williams couldn't quite get her footing right on the green clay of Charleston on Tuesday, but she made a winning start to her 2013 WTA Charleston campaign nonetheless with a 6-2 6-3 dismissal of young Italian Camila Giorgi. Five breaks of serve helped her to get the upper hand, and her own service game held up well as she made 0 double faults and fired 9 aces.
"It definitely wasn't great for me - I played well, but I wasn't great, footing-wise. I was just trying to get my stability," she told reporters.
"I only had one or two days of practice. But I felt good - I'm glad I came here and hope I can get ready for what can hopefully be another good clay court season."
Many had been looking forward to a third round showdown between Sabine Lisicki and Serena, but Burdette had other plans. After expectedly losing the first set against Lisicki, the American qualifier shot back to achieve the biggest success of her career to date, an outstanding 3-6 7-6 7-5 win.
Serena might not have been at her best in round two but don't expect her to fall short against the world No. 99. Burdette showed tremendous fighting spirit to defy Lisicki, but the world No. 1 is a far more consistent performer.
Prediction: Williams in two.
