Victoria Azarenka takes on Samantha Stosur this afternoon in the final of the 2012 WTA Doha Open.
Even against first class opposition, newly crowned world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka looks unlikely to let go of her 2012 winning streak just yet.
The top seed continued her straightforward march in Doha on Saturday, easily beating Agnieszka Radwanska (6-2 6-4) to reach today's final.
Unfortunately for the Belarusian, she seems to be suffering from an ankle injury, which caused her to hobble on a few of the points she played in her semi-final win. She sustained the injury to her right ankle by falling whilst attempting to make a tricky drop shot.
Stosur benefited from an injury win in the semi-finals, as Marion Bartoli was forced to withdraw when she was a set down. Even after Bartoli dropped the first set, it seemed too early to write her off. Still, the third seed was handed the victory as Bartoli could no longer continue playing on her injured right calf.
With this injury news in mind, there’s a chance that Stosur will be able to win this week’s title. Given the difficulties she endured at the start of the season, few would begrudge Stosur such a success. That said, if Azarenka turns up fully fit, she should be considered the favourite.
Prediction: Stosur in three.
