The Madrid Masters takes place this week and although Serena Williams is the current world No. 1, Maria Sharapova is hot on her heels and could leapfrog her in a few days from now.
If Serena slips up at the 2013 Mutua Madrid Open then Sharapova will get her chance to reclaim top spot.
However, the Russian has never played especially well in the Spanish capital in the past, and if Williams wins a match she’ll need to reach at least the quarter-finals to have a chance of overtaking.
Serena’s first big challenge could come against Li Na in the last eight and if the Chinese star gets the better of her, then a semi-final run from Sharapova would see her overtake her rival.
If Serena and Sharapova both reach the final as many fans will hope, then the winner will head into Rome as No. 1. However, even if Serena does lose the top spot this week, she’ll have the chance to immediately get it back next week. Sharapova won the Rome title last year and as a result has a ton of points to defend, while Serena lost in the early rounds.
