Álvarez homers twice in Astros victory, improves MVP chances

Cuban outfielder Yordan Álvarez put his name back in the MVP conversation after leading the Houston Astros to a dominant 5-3 victory over the New York Mets.

The 24-year-old recorded a pair of home runs, giving him three homers in the Astros’ two-game sweep of the depleted Mets.

Álvarez will be taking his act to the Big Apple on Thursday when the Astros begin its four-game series against the New York Yankees and fellow MVP candidate Aaron Judge.

“I think whenever a player goes to New York and plays there, just really excited about the history of that team and the ballpark. We know they’re a really good team so we’re just going to go out there and compete and try to win,” Álvarez said.

In seven career regular-season games in Yankee Stadium, Álvarez has put up a slash line average of .400/.438/.933 in addition to five homers and nine RBIs.
