Atlanta Braves acquire Robinson Cano from San Diego Padres

Published on

The Atlanta Braves acquired Dominican second Robinson Cano from the San Diego Padres for cash considerations in the hopes of addressing its offensive woes.

The 39-year-old Cano missed the entire 2021 season after being tested for performance-enhancing drugs and was subsequently released by the New York Mets in May.

He inked a major league deal with the Padres soon thereafter but was released after turning down the team’s request to go to the Triple-A.

Cano’s veteran status gave him the right to test free agency though he re-signed with the Padres on a minor league deal after checking his options on the open market.

During his time with Triple-A El Paso, Cano posted a slash line of .333/.375/.479 over 104 plate appearances, a massive improvement to his major league averages of .149/.182/.189 with the Padres and Mets.

Cano will be joining a depleted Braves team who desperately needs to fill the void at second base after a foot injury sidelined Ozzie Albies until at least mid-August.
