Blue Jays fire manager Charlie Montoyo amid lackluster season

Published on

The Toronto Blue Jays are letting go of Puerto Rican manager Charlie Montoyo amid a tough July stretch.

Montoyo will be replaced by bench coach John Schneider, who was named the interim manager on Wednesday. Triple-A Buffalo skipper Casey Candaele was promoted to the interim bench coach role.

After a strong-start to the season, the Blue Jays struggled to find their rhythm this July, only picking up three victories.

Montoyo’s departure comes on the heels of a 4-3 victory against the Philadelphia Phillies at Rogers Centre on Tuesday.

A former bench coach in Tampa Bay, Montoyo was named as the Blue Jays’ manager in 2018 and led the team to an American League (AL) Wild Card Series in the condensed 2020 season.

The team fell just one game short of the playoffs last season after finishing with a 91-71 (win-loss) card.

Currently, the Blue Jays are sitting in fourth place in the AL East and hold the third wild card spot with a 46-42 card.
