Encarnacion makes history in Marlins victory over Mets

Miami Marlins prospect Jerar Encarnacion put together an MLB debut to remember on Sunday afternoon.

This was after the 24-year-old Dominican recorded a grand slam in his first career hit in the Marlins’ 6-2 victory over the New York Mets.

He became the fifth player in MLB history to register a grand slam on his initial hit and the first Marlin to do so since Jeremy Hermida in 2005.

Trailing 1-0 after six innings, Encarnacion capitalized on the mistake of Mets reliever Seth Lugo as he sent a 93.3 mph sinker on the outside part of the plate over the right-field wall for a 4-1 lead.

“Just looking to make contact with the ball, pretty much looking for one run. We wanted to tie the game. That was my approach,” Encarnacion said.

For his memorable performance, Encarnacion also became the first NL/AL player to accumulate a grand slam, steal a base, and register an outfield assist in an MLB debut.
