Ex-Mets slugger Yoenis Céspedes reportedly making baseball comeback

Published on

Two years after his last professional game, former New York Mets slugger Yoenis Céspedes will be returning to the pitch after signing with the Águilas Cibaeñas of the Dominican Winter League.

The 36-year-old Céspedes last played for the Mets in August 2020. He subsequently opted out of the remainder of the 2020 season and was unable to sign with an MLB team for the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

During his time with the Mets, the Cuban outfielder was a lethal offensive threat, posting a slash line of .287/.337/.604 in addition to 17 dingers in 2015. Céspedes was named as an All-Star in 2016 and signed a four-year $110 million deal to stay in New York.

However, things took a massive downturn from there as Céspedes was hounded with injuries and missed most of 2018 and all of 2019 after undergoing surgery on both of his heels.

Besides the Mets, Céspedes also suited up for the Oakland Athletics, the Boston Red Sox, and the Detroit Tigers after defecting from Cuba in 2011.
