Molina makes history, sets MLB record for putouts by a catcher

Puerto Rican legend Yadier Molina etched himself in the history books of MLB after setting the record for most career putouts by a catcher on Tuesday in Busch Stadium.

The moment came when the 39-year-old catcher caught a foul popup for an out in Game 1 of the St Louis Cardinals match against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cardinals won 3-1.

Molina now has 14,865 putouts in his career. He passed the previous MLB record of Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez which stands at 14,864.

“No doubt, that’s a sign of how long he’s been in the league. It seems like they’re breaking records left and right with the group that we have another one. [Outs] are important – regardless of who’s making them,” said Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol.

Earlier this year, the Puerto Rican has been working with Adam Wainwright to become the winningest starting battery in league history with 203 combined victories. They moved into a tie for second with Del Crandall and Warren Spahn for most starts with 316 on Saturday, nine away from passing the all-time mark of 324.
