Bullock wins Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion

The Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion award is a prestigious award in the NBA and is awarded to those who fight for justice in the world and uphold the NBA’s values of equality, respect and inclusion. This year the award has been given to Reggie Bullock of the Dallas Mavericks for his work in marginalized communities, especially the LGBTQ+ community.

In 2014 Bullock’s sister Mia Henderson, a transwoman was murdered and Bullock set out to honour his sister’s legacy and the life that was unfortunately taken away from her. Since joining the Mavericks, Bullock has been incredibly active in the local community of Dallas supporting those in need. He worked proficiently with groups such as Dallas Southern Pride, House of Rebirth and many other organizations in the area to combat hatred and spread peace and positivity. Bullock also established the RemarkaBULL organization to aid LGBTQ+ people to find suitable and comfortable housing, whilst also making sure that they receive the emotional and mental support they deserve.

Bullock is a shining light in the NBA and hopefully, through this player’s activism, more people that identify as LGBTQ+ will become more involved with the sport of basketball which has predominantly been a very heterosexual sport throughout its lifespan. Through his work, Bullock continues to honour his sister Mia’s name and brings hope to those who are struggling in what can be an incredibly cruel world.
