Disney set to release Antetokounmpo brothers documentary

Published on

It’s rare in the NBA that family members will play together, especially brothers. There are a handful of brothers in the league such as the Ball brothers, the Curry brothers and the Holidays but this is no match for the Antetokounmpo family that has had three of the four brothers play in the NBA.

The Antetokounmpo brothers maybe some of the most likeable players in the league due to their kind nature and humble beginnings so much so that Disney have picked up their story and are turning it into a documentary for their streaming platform Disney+.

Fans first heard of the Antetokounmpos when Gianiss was drafted to the Milwaukee Bucks in 2013 with the 15th overall pick. Nobody expected that Gianiss would become the player that he is in today’s league as now he is regarded as one of the best in the NBA and many think Gianiss could go down and be talked about in the same conversations as LeBron, Jordan and Kobe. Gianiss made such a huge impression on the league and honed his craft to become the player he is today. His growth in the league had such an impact that it would even aid his brothers in getting into the NBA.

The Antetokounmpos have seen great success in the NBA with two of the brothers winning the coveted NBA championship and with one, that being Gianiss being named Most Valuable Player in 2020. It wasn’t always sunshine and rainbows for the Greek family however as the family grew up in extreme poverty. Sons of Nigerian immigrants, the brothers struggled growing up and had to help their parents make money as nobody would hire them due to their nationality. The brothers would spend many days and nights on the streets of Athens trying to sell watches and handbags to help put food on the table. Basketball became a way of escape for the brothers and they found that they were dominating their Greek friends due to their body types and natural basketball ability.

The documentary follows this story and viewers will be able to watch the growth of the family and how their lives changed so drastically after originally moving from Nigeria. It is set to air on Disney+ on June 24th and viewership is expected to be high due to the popularity of the brothers amongst basketball fans.
