Weight Clause in Zion Williamson’s Contract

Zion Williamson has been under the spotlight ever since his debut in the NBA back in 2019 after the Pelicans selected him with the first pick in the draft. The athletic power forward enjoyed some spectacular performances throughout his first two years in the league, but he then suffered a fracture in his right foot which sidelined him for the entire 2021/22 season.

Due to the injury Williamson could not play or train and through this he appeared to put on a lot of weight. He went from the top prospect of the 2019 NBA Draft to supposedly one of the biggest busts in NBA history in just a matter of months. During this off-season, Williamson signed a 5-year max contract extension worth $276 million if he manages to make a thunderous return.

An interesting clause in his contract suggests that he needs to maintain a certain weight so that he won’t get penalized. Williamson’s weight and body fat must not exceed 295 pounds, otherwise, he is subject to further sanctions. On top of that, his body metrics will be monitored periodically across the length of his newly-signed deal.
