Nathan Cleverly Set To Fight Andrzej Fonfara

Nathan Cleverly has agreed to fight Andrzej Fonfara in a light heavyweight showdown in the autumn.

Cleverly has been looking for a big fight at 175lbs to get himself back into the title mix and was initially expected to challenge WBA light heavyweight champion, Juergen Braehmer. But the Welshman is now set to fight Chicago-based Pole, Fonfara, according to Cleverly’s promoter, Eddie Hearn.

Cleverly is rebuilding after suffering a convincing loss to domestic rival Tony Bellew back in November at cruiserweight, but the former WBO light heavyweight champion is now back down in his more natural division against Fonfara.

Fonfara boosted his name recognition immeasurably when he scored an upset win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in April. The light heavyweight was born in Poland but makes his living fighting out of Chicago, USA and only has three defeats on his 31 fight record.

”We have had lots of big fight offers come in for Nathan over the past few months and we have taken our time to choose the right one,” said Hearn.

”The Juergen Braehmer fight was one we were very close to taking but just felt after his big win against Chavez, Fonfara was the perfect fight on the world stage.”

As for a fight date, the fight is expected to take place in October, says Hearn.

”We are working with his team on the date expected to be in October and we will release news shortly.”
