Núñez notches statement win to stay undefeated

Published on

Rising boxing star Luis “The Twist” Núñez knew he needed a statement win after Mexican Jonathan Fierro claimed that the Dominican Republic should stick to baseball.

And on Saturday, the 22-year old Núñez did just that by dealing Fierro his first professional loss in their action-packed featherweight bout at the Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona.

All three judges – Chris Flores, Dennis O’Connell, and Gonzalo Valenzuela – scored the bout 96-94 for Núñez.

Both Núñez and Fierro brought the pain from the opening bell as they exchanged body shots, much to the delight of the crowd that rose to its feet in the middle of the fifth round.

However, Núñez was able to stop Fierro on his tracks with a vicious right hand before connecting with another left hook at the ten second marker.

The Dominican continued his onslaught in the championship rounds as he countered Fierro’s lateral movements with jabs on the latter’s midsection en-route to the victory.

With the win, Núñez scored his third straight victory against an unbeaten opponent to remain immaculate at 17-0 (win-loss) with 12 KOs.
