Taylor vs Serrano to fight in upcoming major women’s match

Published on

Two leading women’s boxers have a date for their big fight, it has been confirmed.

Katie Taylor will take on Amanda Serrano in a major fight located at Madison Square Garden in New York.

The date for the fight has been announced as April 30.

Taylor, from Ireland, is a world leader in women’s boxing and has been described as the leading lightweight champion.

Serrano, from Puerto Rico, has taken several global titles over the years and has ranged across more than five weight divisions.

A fight between the two of them has been planned for a long time – though it has never come to pass.

There was a fight scheduled previously, but it was unable to take place due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Making history

The fight will take place at Madison Square Garden, making it the first time that a women’s fight has taken the top spot in a lineup there.

There may also be history made if Serrano manages to pull off a victory over Taylor.

Taylor has won every single one of the double-digit number of fights she has competed in.

Reactions from the fighters

In interview rounds with the press, both fighters expressed their optimism about the upcoming match.

Taylor, who is currently defending a record of having beaten other top women boxers such as Jennifer Han, acknowledged the sense of history that hung over the fixture already – despite it being months away.

“People have been talking about this fight for years and there have been times I wondered if it was ever going to happen so I’m very grateful to Eddie Hearn, everyone at Matchroom, DAZN and Madison Square Garden for getting it over the line.”

She went on to say that one of her motivations for becoming a professional boxer was to be able to participate in events like these.

“When I turned professional my goal was to be involved in huge events like this so to headline at Madison Square Garden in a fight of this magnitude is really the pinnacle of the sport.”

She also heralded the “iconic” nature of the location of the match.

“It’s such an iconic venue and has been home to so many of the historic moments in boxing and I truly believe this will be another one.”

Serrano, meanwhile, used her remarks to praise her opponent.

“It is a dream come true to have the opportunity to headline Madison Square Garden and do so against one of the greatest boxers of all time in Katie Taylor.”

Serrano, who is currently defending a run of almost 30 wins in a row, went on to explain how she had been committed to the world of boxing for her entire life.

“Since I was a young girl, my only boyfriend has been boxing. I have dedicated my life to him, and this event makes that commitment worth every minute.”
