Hockley Bids Adieu to CA Leadership

Cricket Australia is set for a significant leadership change as CEO Nick Hockley has decided to step down from his role at the helm after the upcoming season. Hockley’s departure marks the end of a notable era under his stewardship, and it comes after nearly 13 years of contribution to Australian Cricket, out of which the last five have seen him lead as the CEO of Cricket Australia.

CA Chair Mike Baird confirmed that Hockley had advised the board of his intention to resign next summer. Hockley’s announcement to step down is reportedly fuelled by a desire to take on new challenges. Furthermore, expressing his intentions well in advance provides Cricket Australia with ample time to search for a successor who can continue to build upon the strong foundations laid during his tenure.

Nick Hockley is anticipated to depart from his role toward the end of March 2025, although the exact timeline remains flexible, possibly extending depending upon the transition and the appointment process of the next CEO.

During his time as CEO, Hockley oversaw a period marked by significant deal signings which are geared to set Cricket Australia on a growth trajectory for the next seven years. He also spearheaded the conceptualization and execution of a new five-year strategic plan aimed at advancing the sport further.

The tenure of Hockley has been remarkable in terms of the achievements of Australia’s national cricket teams. Under his leadership, the teams clinched numerous accolades, including retention and winning of both the women’s and men’s Ashes, a collection of six ICC trophies, victory in the World Test Championship, the Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup success, and a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games. These accomplishments highlight Australia’s cricketing prowess on an international level during his leadership.

Hockley’s association with Australian Cricket began in October 2012 when he joined as General Manager for Commercial & Marketing of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015. He then elevated to the role of CEO for the Local Organising Committee of the ICC T20 World Cup 2020. These roles have been significant in shaping his understanding and vision for cricket in the country.

In light of this announcement, Cricket Australia will commence a comprehensive search to identify the individual who will navigate the board and the sport through its next chapter of growth and achievement. Hockley’s legacy of strategic advancements and team successes creates a high benchmark for his successor, setting the stage for an exciting period of transition and opportunity within Australian Cricket’s governance.
