Egan Bernal facing more surgeries after crash

Published on

Egan Bernal, a former Tour de France winner and star cyclist for the Ineos Grenadiers, a UCI WorldTeam, crashed into the back of a public transport bus on January 24, 2022.

The accident occurred on the Columbian’s native soil near his hometown of Zipaquirá while training with several other members of his team.

He sustained numerous serious injuries and was rushed to the intensive care unit of Clínica Universidad de La Sabana in Bogotá.

These injuries include fractures to several vertebrae and his right femur and right patella.

He also suffered thoracic trauma due to fractured ribs and a punctured lung.

Reports indicated that Bernal was training on a highway on his time-trial bicycle and collided with a bus that had stopped in the emergency lane to drop off passengers.

The cyclist traveled at approximately 60 kilometers per hour when the collision occurred.

Doctors treating Bernal reported that he is in good spirits and on the road to recovery but will undergo further surgery to address a metacarpal fracture in his hand and dentoalveolar fractures in his mouth.

The 2019 Tour de France winner took to Twitter to say that there is a 95% chance that he may end up as a person with paraplegia.

A statement released by the hospital detailed that Bernal is continuing with a rehabilitation plan and has no signs of infection.

Unfortunately, this tragic occurrence was followed by another cycling accident a few days later.

Brandon Rivera, Bernal’s teammate, and friend, also crashed near the site of Bernal’s accident and fractured and dislocated his elbow.

Rivera is receiving treatment at the same hospital.

Bernal, one of the youngest ever winners of the prestigious Tour de France and 2021 winner of the Giro d’Italia, may have to face the possibility that his promising career has come to an abrupt end.
