2022 Premier League Darts – everything you need to know

With the dust having settled on the World Championship and The Masters, attention now turns to the 2022 Premier League.

A fixture on the PDC Tour, the Premier League is an invitational tournament that sees eight of the world’s best players compete over a period of 17 weeks to see who will be crowned the overall league winner.

In what is yet another star-studded line-up, Gerwyn Price, Peter Wright, Michael van Gerwen, James Wade, Michael Smith, Gary Anderson, Jonny Clayton and Joe Cullen will take part in this year’s event.

The players will compete for the first-place prize of £275,000 as well as a weekly £10,000 bonus.

The Premier League used to be a round-robin-style format, with each player playing the other twice.

At the end of all the matches, the top four would compete in the semi-finals and finals to crown the overall winner.

However, this year, the Premier League will have a brand-new format.

Those competing in this year’s edition will be hoping to add their names to the illustrious roll of honor of previous winners, including Phil Taylor and Raymond van Barneveld.

Jonny Clayton is the defending champion, having achieved success in the 2021 tournament.

Both Gary Anderson and Michael van Gerwen also return as former champions.

What is the new Premier League format?

The PDC has devised a brand-new format for the Premier League that it hopes will keep the excitement throughout the 17 weeks of the tournament.

The round-robin format has been discarded, and in its place is a mini weekly knockout tournament.

Each week, eight players will line up in the quarter-finals.

The winners of the quarter-finals will play semi-finals, before the semi-final victors play in the final.

Players will be assigned points depending on how far they get in the weekly event.

These points will then form the basis of the league table.

The winner of each week will be awarded five points and a bonus of £10,000; the runner-up will be awarded three points; and the losing semi-finalists will get two points.

After 16 weeks of action, the top four players will qualify for finals night, when two further semi-finals will be played, with an overall winner then crowned.

Where are the matches taking place?

The Premier League is played at a different location every week.

This year, the league will start in Cardiff before moving to different locations across the UK.

There will also be stopovers in Rotterdam and Berlin.

The playoffs at the end of the tournament are due to take place in Newcastle.

Who is the bookmakers’ favorite?

Picking an overall winner in the Premier League is notoriously hard.

As the current world number one, Gerwyn Price starts as this year’s favorite – however, the betting is tight across the board.
