Austrian Grand Prix preview: Looking ahead to this weekend’s race

Published on

Round 11 of the 2022 Formula 1 World Championship takes place at the Red Bull Ring in Austria.

Last weekend’s British Grand Prix provided one of the best races so far this season, so fans will be hoping for more of the same as the teams head to Spielberg.

The track returned to the calendar in 2014 and has proved to be popular since its comeback. It is located in the picturesque Styrian Mountains and, despite its short distance, can be compared to a roller-coaster ride. The first part of the lap is a climb uphill to a tight hairpin, before the cars make their way back downhill through a quick sequence of corners.

Carlos Sainz comes into the event full of confidence, after taking his first win in F1 at Silverstone. On the other hand, team-mate Charles Leclerc will be desperate to get back to winning ways after a run of results that have not been going his way. The team’s strategy at Silverstone certainly worked to Sainz’s advantage and Leclerc will be hoping to get his championship challenge back on track in Austria.

As the track’s name suggests, this weekend’s race will be a home event for Red Bull so they can expect lots of support from the Austrian fans. After struggling at the last race following damage to the Red Bull, Max Verstappen saw his lead in the driver’s championship cut to 34 points. The Dutchman’s championship challenge is still looking strong, but he can’t afford to have many more bad results.
