The Formula 1 World Championship heads to Silverstone for round ten of the 2022 season.
The British Grand Prix is one of only two races which has been on the F1 calendar every year since the inaugural championship in 1950.
The race at Silverstone is a firm favourite with F1 fans and is one of the best-attended race weekends on the calendar. The fast, sweeping turns of the circuit also make it a favourite with the drivers and it should be well suited for this season’s new generation of cars.
With three British drivers and seven of the ten teams based in the UK, there will be plenty of home support.
One driver guaranteed the backing of the home crowd is seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. He has won the British Grand Prix more times than any other driver with eight wins at Silverstone, including last year’s race. The major talking point was the first lap collision involving the Mercedes driver and Max Verstappen which ignited their season-long championship battle.
It may be difficult for Hamilton to add to those wins this weekend with the struggles Mercedes have had this season. However, with some planned upgrades, the team are optimistic that the track will be more suited to their car and hope to get closer to Red Bull and Ferrari.
Completing the all-British driver line-up at Mercedes is the consistent George Russell. As the only driver who has finished in the top five at every race this season, Russell’s transition to Mercedes has been impressive and he has backed up the team’s decision to promote him from Williams.
Red Bull certainly have the current momentum in the championships after winning the last six races. With five of those wins, reigning world champion Verstappen is looking formidable and is favourite to retain his title. The straight-line speed shown this season by the Red Bull will once again help them at Silverstone.
The high-speed track, great atmosphere and possible changeable weather make for an exciting British Grand Prix this weekend.
