Formula 1 will not be replacing the canceled Russian Grand Prix for the 2022 season and will proceed with 22 races.
The race in Sochi was due to take place on 25 September but was permanently canceled in February following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
F1 had hoped to find a suitable alternative with events at Qatar, Turkey or a second race in Singapore being potential options. However, once it became clear that they were going to be unviable, the sport’s bosses decided it would go ahead with a 22-race calendar.
With a record-breaking 23 races originally planned, the season was shaping up to be a busy one for the teams. So, the news will come as some relief to them and help to reduce some of the workloads.
The sport continues to look at ways in which it can increase its global reach and, with new events planned for 2023, it is inevitable that a 23-race season is not going to be far off.
