Formula 1 plan to introduce 100% sustainable fuel for 2026

Formula 1 has announced that it has developed a 100% sustainable fuel in its latest push to be net-zero carbon by 2030.

The new fuel will coincide with the next generation of hybrid engines which are due to be introduced in 2026. In a statement, F1 confirmed that: “the fuel has purposely been designed with a ‘drop-in’ feature to help accelerate adoption and reduce costs for use in existing road cars (both internal combustion engines and hybrids).”

Throughout its history, F1 has been at the forefront of technological advancements which have benefited the sport and the car industry. In 2019 they announced the ambitious plans to be net-zero carbon by 2030 which would cover on and off-track operations.

Since the commitment was made, the sport has introduced remote broadcasting to reduce freight, redesigned freight containers to enable the use of more efficient aircraft and changed to 100% renewable energy at its offices.

It also held its first carbon neutral broadcast at the British Grand Prix in 2021, with plans in place to do this again at the 2022 event along with future races.
