Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton’s relationship with Brazil is set to take a notch higher after Brazilian congressman Andre Figueiredo proposed a bill to make the British driver an honorary citizen.
The bill has yet to be voted on in the Brazilian parliament, but presidential candidate Ciro Gomes backs the idea of giving Hamilton honorary citizenship.
“Hamilton, you already live in our hearts. With the honorary citizenship, you will be even closer to us,” Gomes posted on social media.
Hamilton has long had a bond with the country. His idol and legendary F1 driver Ayrton Senna was Brazilian, and coincidentally, he grabbed his first world championship under intense pressure at the Sao Paulo’s Interlagos circuit in 2008.
“I want to spend more time here in Brazil. It is such a beautiful culture. I’ve only been to Rio and Sao Paulo, but I want to come back for Christmas, New Year, or something” added Hamilton.
The affinity grew even stronger when Hamilton won the Brazilian GP last year and paraded the Brazilian flag during the celebrations.
