Pierre Gasly is to remain with AlphaTauri for the 2023 season, putting an end to any speculation about the French driver’s future.
Gasly had hoped to earn a move back to Red Bull where he had a short stint in 2019. However, with the recent news that Red Bull had extended Sergio Perez’s contract until the end of 2024, those hopes had been dashed.
He has been with Red Bull’s second team AlphaTauri since 2018, when they were formerly known as Toro Rosso. After impressing in his debut season, Gasly was promoted to Red Bull as a replacement for Daniel Ricciardo. However, he struggled in comparison to team-mate Max Verstappen and was demoted mid-way through the season.
Despite this setback, Gasly has revived his career at AlphaTauri and has developed into a consistent points-scorer and secured his first victory at the Italian Grand Prix in 2020.
The 26-year-old has 16 points in 2022 and sits 11th in the driver’s championship. With his current contract due to expire at the end of 2023, Gasly may need to look elsewhere to fulfil his ambition of competing at the front.
